The School of Mining & Earth Sciences (SMES) at Timbuktu American University (TAU)** equips students with the scientific expertise, technical skills, and ethical foundation to manage and explore Earth’s natural resources responsibly.

Rooted in Africa’s geological richness and global sustainability goals, the School prepares geologists, mining engineers, and environmental specialists who lead innovation in resource extraction, energy production, and environmental protection.

Our Mission
To train professionals and researchers who combine modern technology, environmental awareness, and policy knowledge to ensure the responsible use of natural resources for Africa’s development and global sustainability.

  • Mining EngineeringCore: Mine Planning, Rock Mechanics, Mineral Processing, Drilling & Blasting, Mine Safety. Electives: Automation in Mining, Sustainable Mining, Robotics in Mining.
  • Petroleum Geology & Energy ResourcesCore: Sedimentology, Petroleum Systems, Basin Analysis, Drilling Engineering. Electives: Offshore Drilling, Petroleum Economics, Enhanced Oil Recovery.
  • Geology & GeosciencesCore: Structural Geology, Petrology, Stratigraphy, Tectonics. Electives: Paleontology, Hydrogeology, Earth System Science.
  • Geophysics & Remote SensingCore: Seismology, Gravity & Magnetism, Geophysical Exploration, Satellite Imaging. Electives: Earthquake Risk Assessment, Remote Sensing for Mining, Planetary Geophysics.
  • Geochemistry & Environmental GeoscienceCore: Isotope Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Hydrogeochemistry, Environmental Geology. Electives: Soil Geochemistry, Environmental Impact Studies, Water Chemistry.
